Book Review & Giveaway: Coastal Knits
This is easily one of the most beautiful pattern collections I can ever remember seeing. Every aspect- the patterns, the photographs, the sketches, the information on the design process, the layout- everything contributes to the overall look and feel of this book. Some of my favourite patterns are:
Water's Edge Cardigan
Rustling Leaves Beret:
Rocky Coast Cardigan:
Gnarled Oak Cardigan:
What strikes me the most about this pattern collection is that every single knit looks easy to wear. Not over styled, but realistically pretty- like any of us could knit this, put it on, and get the exact same look.
Alana and Hannah seem very well paired in this East Coast/West Coast collaboration- the knits work together as a collection really well, and it seems only fitting that they share the glory of the two most popular patterns- Alana designed the Rustling Leaves beret and Hannah designed the Rocky Coast cardigan, both are the strong runners for most popular pattern in the collection.
Looking at the patterns on Ravelry does not do this book justice- it really is a gem. I really liked the patterns when I saw them on Ravelry, but it wasn't until a had a copy of the book in my hands that I was utterly blown away by the whole collection. You need to get this! And when you do, head on over to the Ravelry Coastal Knits Group for a community of others who are also knitting the patterns. You know what else would be fun? How about we give away a copy of Coastal Knits? Leave me a comment below telling me your favourite pattern from the collection by November 20th, 12:00 p.m. (that's noon!) EST.

The patterns are lovely and not overly complicated. I think the yarn choices are what intrigue me most. Every photo I have seen makes the garment look uber comfortable without the frump factor. It's on my Christmas list. I would love to have a copy.
I love the Rocky Coast Cardigan, but I think I most want to wear the Water's Edge. All the designs are so beautiful and I really really really hope I win this giveaway, but of course will keep my fingers crossed for everyone. ;)
There are some really nice designs in this one! I love the Rocky Coast cardigan - like so many - and if it wasn't such a hassle to get books here in Belgium I might have already bought this one!
I've been reading so many good reviews about this book, I must add it to my Christmas wish list! (Unless I'm lucky enough to win your copy!)
My favorite is the Gnarled oak cardigan.
This book looks so amazing! I love the gnarled oak cardigan.
Rocky Coast definitely. It's so beautiful!
I really love the water hedge cardi (an th rocky coast almost as much !) they are both on my (big) to do list ! thanks for this give away !
Love love the Rocky Coast Cardigan. I looks so lovely and that it will go with so many outfits from jeans to skirts.
This looks like a great book.
Definitely the Rustling Leaves Beret. It's so polished and clean, but the way the leaves are made gives it a flow and movement. I just love it. Everything in the book is beautiful though, really.
I love the wildflower cardigan! The pockets are gorgeous and that yellowy color... yum! I like the simplicity of the bayside sweater too. Love to make them if I'm chosen for the book. Thanks Julie!
That's definitely Rocky Coast cardi. I love those stitches!
My favorite is the waters edge cardigan! it's just absolutely perfect and something that I could wear all the time...of course the rocky coast is very beautiful as well!!
I love the Gnarled Oak Cardigan! This book looks amazing!
After I knit through my extensive extensive queue and stash I plan to pick up this book (or win it maybe) and get some TFA Green label in Natural for the Rocky Coast Cardigan.
Winning this book would be amazing! Thanks so much Julie!
Waters Edge and Wildflower are my favs! I love that both are feminine without being overly dainty.
Would love to win this book - the review from everyone have been amazing.
I absolutely love the Rocky Coast cardigan!
Love the Rustling Leaves Beret and the Gnarled Oak Cardigan! Hope I win! I love regional knit books. :)
The rustling leaves beret!
Ok, I kind of feel bad because I think I've entered this giveaway on a few other blogs as well....but how could I not? I love the Rocky Coast Cardigan...though everything looks amazing!
The Rocky Coast Cardigan is my favourite, hands down.
I just love that Rocky Coast Cardigan. It is so flattering. I would love to have this book in my collection!
Rustling leaves beret for me! I love everything in this book, though. It all looks like they are interesting knits while having a clean ready to wear look.
I am loving the Rocky Coast Cardigan. So pretty.
I am in love with the Rocky Coast cardigan...and I mean I would be knitting it in the same yarn and same color, which is definitely a rarity for me. Having lived on both coasts, this book makes me feel all snuffly and sentimental inside. :)
Cheers!
Daisy
I adore the Rocky Coast cardigan. I've been dreaming of making it in a nice foggy grey color! Thanks for the chance to win.
So many pretty designs! Would love a copy of this one!
Gnarled Oak Cardigan, though there are so many close seconds!
I have been drooling over this book for a month now. It is hard to choose my favorite, but the Rocky Coast Cardigan is probably it.
It is so difficult to choose just one but I'll go for the Wildflower Cardigan. Thank you for this wonderful giveaway!
I like the Gnarled Oak Cardigan, among several others. Thanks for the giveaway!
I don't think I can choose just one. I love Rocky Coast and have been plotting how I can make it out of stash dk weight yarn (as I am preparing for a new years resolution to "use what I have".) But I also love how delicate Wildflower is. It's tough to name an absolute favorite with this one. That's why it's awesome you are doing a giveaway! Thanks for the opportunity!
Many nice patterns in this book. I would choose Wildflower but think I would knit other patterns as well. I would love to own this book. Thank you for the opportunity.
Rocky Coast Cardigan is the pattern that just screams make me now! Although the Gnarled Oak is pretty too.
I love the Rocky Coast cardigan
Wildflower, wildflower, wildflower:o)
Thanks. I'd love to have this book:o)
I love the Rocky Coast Cardigan! So beautiful.
I truly love the whole collection, so it's hard to pick one. But the Wildflower is so very gorgeous I guess that would be it. Maybe it's the sunny-day-in-a-field photos that seduce me.
I love the Rocky Coast Cardigan!!
I love, love, love the Rocky Coast cardigan--it looks so fuzzy and comfortable, plus the white is perfect for the pattern. Thanks for the giveaway!
Rocky Coast Cardigan, hands down.
So many lovely patterns to choose from. I know I would start with the rocky coast cardigan and then go on from there!
What a beautiful book - hard to choose one pattern and I'd certainly want to knit several of those stunning designs but especially the buttoned cowl scarf. I'd love this book just for its photography though!
Rocky Coast is something I would LOVE to wear. But realistically, I'd knit the Water's Edge Cardigan first :)
Can't wait to knit the Water's Edge Cardigan.
My favorites patterns from the Coastal Knits book are the Bayside Pullover, for its simplicity and pretty cables and the Rustling Leaves Beret, because I love berets!
The Rocky Coast Cardigan looks fantastic- very wearable, especially in a transition season like I'm in now!
What a lovely giveaway! I love the patterns in this book - I've had my eye on it since the first pattern previews came out. Tough choice, but I'd have to say that the Wildflower Cardigan is my fave. For now. :)
I would love to get this book! I don't generally sign up for giveaways, but this one I would be delighted to win. :-)
I really like the Wildflower Cardigan! The pockets are adorable.
Of course, my favorite pattern is the Rocky Coast Cardigan, but the Panoramic stole is intriging me ! And thé book would be à must to plan my next trip !!!
This is a beautiful book--lovely patterns!!
The Gnarled Oak Cardigan is stunning. How did I not know about this book? Thanks for reviewing it, Julie.
I am still torn between Rustling Leaves and Gnarled Oak as my favorite. They are both gorgeous - oh, perhaps this issue is most easily solved by making both and wearing it as a set. There, that sounds just about perfect.
Thank you for the chance to have my own copy of this book - it's a definite treasure.
I want this book SO bad!! I've been thrilled ever since Alana first mentioned it on her blog/podcast. My favorite pattern is the Rocky Coast Cardigan. But, I have a feeling I'll be knitting almost everything in this book, when I get my hands on it.
Thanks for hosting the giveaway. I would like to make the Water's Edge cardigan. It would be perfect for the spring.
Lucette (in your friends on ravelry)
I love them all but Water's Edge would be fun to knit!
Thanks for the give-away! I was drooling over this book at the Purple Purl last week. My favorite is the Bayside Pullover (love the increasing "gusset" between the cables), and the Rocky Coast Cardigan is a close 2nd.
glad to hear it's as good as it looks!
I love the gnarled oak cardigan. It looks like a gorgeous book - thanks for doing the giveaway!
i love that rocky coast cardigan. i keep seeing it pop up around the internets.... so pretty. and like you said, it just looks so easy to wear!
Sand and Sea is my favorite. I love the color combination.
I love the Rocky Coast Cardigan and would cast it on immediately if I won this book!
I think I'm going to have to agree with you on the Gnarled Oak cardigan. I love the name, the colour of yarn they've chosen, and oh my! Do I love me a beautiful yoked sweater!
Thanks for the giveaway.
wow I love the rustling leaves beret and the gnarled oak cardigan. what a gorgeous book!!!!!!
I totally agree with you, these patterns are beautiful! My favorite one is Gnarled Oak Cardigan.
I will keep my fingers cross!
I am totally a shawl person, and I just love Sand and Sea. Especially the use of contrasting colour for the edging!
Hard to pick a favorite, but I'll narrow it down to a tie between the Rocky Coast and Gnarled Oak cardigans. Another hopeful entrant typing with crossed fingers.
What a nice giveaway but don't count me in because I have it and agree with you that there are so many great knits to make. I just finished waters edge and love it!
The Rocky Coast cardigan is my fave, but I'd knit it in the luscious blue they used for Water's Edge. I agree, it is a great book. Thanks for the chance to win one!
I dream about Rocky Coast Cardigan
Rocky Coast Cardigan! It's beautiful.
That Rustling Leaves Beret has my mouth watering!
Bayside is my favorite pattern! I don't wear cardigans very often and the designers comments "original is worked in linen, making it great for warmer climates" is perfect for me in South Florida. What I find very impressive is the fantastic website these ladies have put together to accompany book release. It gives you in depth looks at sizes, yarn requirements and a variety of photos. Excellent job and congrats to Alana & Hannah!
Hands down for me it's the Rocky Coast Cardigan! I can't wait to get this book from Santa this Christmas.
This collection looks great! I love the mix of simplicity and detail in the gnarled oak cardi.
I am gonna jump on the rocky coast cardigan bandwagon, it's just so pretty :)
lovegallagher @ gmail . com
Water's Edge Cardigan is my current fave :) raineoc@yahoo.com
The Rocky Coast cardigan. It is sophisticated, simple, classy, unfussy, somehow rugged, but very feminine. Love!
I love the Rocky Coast Cardigan! It's just different enough from say the look of cabling--I could wear it over everything.
I love the rustling leaves beret!
I am in love with the Rocky Coast sweater! I have been looking for a pattern like that for quite some time. I think a dark gold would be magnificent~! I would be so happy to have a copy of this book.
I love the Rocky Coast Cardigan and I would love this book! Thanks so much for this awesome giveaway :)
Rocky Coast Cardigan, of course! (Then again, everything is just beautiful.)
Honestly, I thought you were one of the authors for this book because your sense of style is so similar to these ladies'. I'm glad I wasn't too far off when it came to the fact that you did have similar taste...
And congratulations on your pregnancy, by the way!
Absolutely the Rocky Coast Cardigan, I've been wishing and wishing to make it since I saw the very first preview images of the book. I REALLY love a lot of the other patterns, too!
Hi Julie, I've been following your blog for a long time, and always enjoy reading it. Congratulations on your first baby! My daughter is about to make me a grandma for the first time.
The patterns in Coastal Knits look wonderful - I particularly like Water's Edge. I also love the beret. I would love a copy of this, as I could imagine knitting some of these patterns for my daughters and even for me!
I love both Rocky Coast Cardigan and Water's Edge cardigan so much, but I'd have to say Water's Edge would win by a smidge - I love the shaping. Thanks for a give away, I also love this collection!
This looks lovely - I love anything coastal!
I think my favourite is the Water's Edge Cardigan. I love that type of cardi and the elegance of this one is lovely.
I love the Water's Edge Cardigan. It looks very stylish.
The Rocky Coast Cardigan. I've been fascinated by cables lately and for some reason the collar just thrills me to my fingertips.
That gnarled oak cardigan is so pretty. I am a slow knitter so it would take me along time to knit but having that cardi would be worth it.
My favorite pattern would have to be the Cambrian Cowl or Water's Edge. Water's Edge is the first sweater pattern that actually has me contemplating knitting something other than a hat.
I'm going to have to add Coastal Knits to my need to buy book list.
My favourite is the Rustling Leaves Beret. :-)
The Rocky Coast Cardigan -- I'm obsessed with cosy cardigans right now and this pattern definitely fits the bill!
ROCKY COAST CARDIGAN. Because I need a cardigan like I need another hole in my head, but hot dog. I can just see myself tossing it on with some dark jeans like that lovely model and running all around Chicago.
I'm in love with the Rocky Coast Cardigan.
I would make Water's Edge first, then all of the other patterns! This book is amazing!
All of the patterns are lovely, but I love the simplicity of the Cambrian Cowl.
I am in love with the Rocky Coast Cardigan but I think I would knit everything out of this book!
I just love the Rocky Coast cardigan. Would love to knit it!
I absolutely adore the Gnarled Oak cardigan!
Rocky Coast Cardigan and Water's Edge for me. I have the perfect yarns for both in my stash and have this book on my Christmas Wish List. I saw both patterns on Ravelry and immediately fell in love!
The Rocky Coast Cardigan is my favorite.
that rocky coast cardigan is haunting my dreams! gosh. lovely.
and that leafy beret. so cute!
Totally love Rocky Coast! ibarlow on Ravelry.
Ooh, tough call on picking a favorite. I love the Gnarled Oak Cardigan, but I think I'd knit the Bayside Pullover first -- the understated cable detailing is so lovely and unfussy.
I do love the Rocky Coast cardigan. I don't know that I'd ever get around to knitting it (so many sweaters, so little time), but I love it all the same.
i love all of the patterns in this book but i think the gnarled oak cardi is my favorite. thanks for the giveaway.
I have been lusting after the Rocky Coast Cardigan for a while now. I think that will be my next sweater!
I love the rocky coast cardigan paired with the rustling leaves beret. Shows off a great balance of land and sea.
Gnarled Oak Cardigan is my favorite. I love that kind of construction.
Beautiful patterns! I particularly love the beret and the Gnarled Oak Cardigan, and would love to knit them. Thank you for the chance to win -- but even more so for sharing this book with us.
The rocky coast cardigan has been a favorite of mine ever since I first saw it. Love!
Easily the Rocky Coast Cardigan. Do WANT!
The Gnarled Oak Cardigan is my absolute favorite and I would buy the entire book just for that pattern! Although the others are lovely too and this book is definitely going on Christmas list. It seems these days that I love anything with a leaf motif. I love the natural, organic feeling this pattern evokes especially. Perhaps the drought we've been experiencing here in Texas that has killed so many trees has renewed my appreciation for their beauty.
I've got to go for gnarled oak - I'm a sucker for a cardigan, and this one has just the right amount of interest. But then again, water's edge is stunning...
The Gnarled Oak Cardigan is without question my favorite.
My favorite is the Wildflower Cardigan, I especially love that the pockets are flower shaped, such a nice detail.
Thank you for the give-away, and all your lovely posts.
I´d like to wear the most the Bayside Pullover (not in linen, but in soft cashemire). I love the combination of simplicty, slim silhoutte and feminine details.
Cute baby blanket from Wednesday!
Coastal Knits is full of beautiful patterns but the Rocky Coast cardigan is what I most want to make.
Of course I love the Rocky Coast Cardigan, but I'm also a big fan of the Rustling Leaves Beret. Thanks for a great giveaway!
I've gotta go with Rocky Coast as well!
Thanks for this giveaway, Julie! And congrats on your pregnancy!
Water's edge. Love these!
So many pretty designs but I think I'd have to pick the Rocky Coast Cardigan as my favorite. Thanks for the chance to win!
I've long been admiring the Rocky Coast Cardigan. I can honestlysay there's not one FOs in the book that I don't like. I agree with you that all of the knits look wearable!
The gnarled oak cardigan looks fabulous.
The gnarled oak cardigan looks great.

The Rocky Coast Cardigan is to die for!
I definitely have to say I love the Wildflower Cardigan. Simple and beautiful! Thank you for the giveaway!
The Wildflower cardigan is my favourite and the one I would knit first. All the patterns look lovely and it's difficult to select a fav.
Waters Edge Cardie! Love the simplicity of it but wondering how it will look on the fuller figures.
I love the book and how they are promoting it.
I woul love to win!
There are so many beautiful patterns in this book, but I think the Rocky Coast Cardigan is my favorite! jborders(at)ucla(dot)edu
Love all the patterns but if I have to choose it'll be the Gnarled Oak Cardigan.
I love the Rocky Coast Cardi and would love the book, too!
I love all of them, but my favourite has to be the Gnarled Oak Cardigan. This would be such a nice Christmas present to me...hint hint...
Rocky Coast for me!
Ohh, that's a tough one. I'd have to say the Gnarled Oak Cardigan is my favorite. It's perfect--simple design with just enough embellishment. That book seems like just my taste!
The Gnarled Oak Cardigan is my favorite, although the Wildflower cardigan is beautiful too.
all the patterns are lovely but my fave is the rocky coast cardi
Thanks for this really thoughtful review, Julie. You really helped pull together the beauty of both the way the designers create as well as how compatible the patterns are. As much as I love the two most popular designs, I've been admiring the Water's Edge cardigan ever since I first saw it. If I were to get a copy of this book, I'd cast on that little beauty immediately.
Rustling Leaves Beret - to hold curly hair in the wintertime...j
I LOVE the Rocky Coast Cardigan
I'm crazy about the gnarled oak cardigan, but my favorite from the book is Wildflower. Thanks for the giveaway contest!
My favorite is the rocky coast cardigan and the Rustling Leaves Beret. But all the patterns are amazing, it is difficult to choose.
Rustling Leaves Beret for me, please! Truly, all the patterns are gorgeous though... it's impossible to pick one. :)
I absolutely love the Rocky Coast Cardigan. Can't wait to make it!
My favorite is definitely the Rocky Coast Cardigan. Such a pretty stitch pattern and set in the cream color, it is just magnificent
I love the Rustling Leaves Beret, and the Gnarled Oak cardigan. Thanks for offering the book as a drawing!
I agree, this fabulous collection is so wearable. My favorite design is the Rocky Coast Cardigan, because it would be the best addition to my wardrobe. I can imagine wearing it from fall through spring.
Beautiful collection of knits! I particularly like the gnarled oak cardigan.
This book looks fascinating. I think I am most intrigued by waters edge but every day I find a new favorite!
Rocky Coast Cardigan, Gnarled Oak Cardigan, and Bayside Pullover are my Fav.s!
I need a Rocky Coast Cardigan. And a Gnarled Oak Cardigan. And a copy of this book!! Just. Awesome.
A favorite pattern? It's so hard to pick! I love them all. Well, if I have to, then the Rocky Coast Cardigan.
Rocky Coast Cardigan. Please pick me so I can knit it!
What's not to love about the Rocky Coast Cardigan? Please pick me! (pretty please?)
I already have the book, but I would love a copy to give to my sister. I love the Rocky Coast Cardi. Since I am trying to only use stash yarn, I am going with the Rustling Leaves Beret. I have some TFA in my stash that I think will work quite well.
The Gnarled Oak cardigan is my favorite, but I like the other three cardigans too!
I like the wildflower cardigan. Simple, flowing and easy to match with any outfit.
definitely love the rocky coast cardigan!
So many beautiful patterns! I love the Water's Edge Cardigan!
WalkNKnit on Ravelry
Ooooh, that's tough to do. There are so many great designs in the book. I'll choose Wildflower, but it's followed very closely by Rustling Leaves Beret, which is tres elegant!
Rocky Coast Cardigan, hands down. Love it.
I really love that rustling leaves beret - so simple and crisp looking - really nice. I'd love to have a copy of this book on my shelf at home!
Every pattern in this book is gorgeous, it's hard to pick just one. I can see myself knitting every item. My first to knit will be the Rocky Coast cardigan (so there you go... I just chose one). Thanks so much for the giveaway and congrats on YOUR big news!!
My favourite is definitely the Gnarled Oak! Beautiful!
Definitely the Gnarled Oak! Beautiful!
The Gnarled Oak Cardigan is by far my favorite! Especially in that beautiful green. I would love to have a copy of this wonderful book!
Bayside and Gnarled Oak Cardigan!! So simple and elegant. I wish I was skilled enough to add these to my wardrobe =) ...maybe with a copy of the book I could strive to be!
I really love the Rocky Coast Cardigan. It's lovely.
So hard to choose! Either Gnarled Oak or Rocky Coast. Both so wearable! Thanks for hosting the giveaway.
Its a toss up between the Rustled Leaf Beret and Rocky Coast cardigan which seem so popular!
My fave is the Rocky Coast cardigan - love the white- it gives it an expensive look - a great way to class up denim. Looks like a beautiful book :)
Fabulous collection! But if it has to be one pattern: Water's Edge - totally my style!
I love all patterns from this book but Rocky Coast Cardigan is my favorite. Just simply beautiful, it's been in my Ravelry queue from the moment I first saw it.
Happy knitting,
greetings from sunny Scotland,
Kasia
Oh, it must be Rustling Leaves Beret!!
I've just finished my first yoke sweater but I prefer to wear cardigans so for that reason I think the Gnarled Oak cardigan would be great. Can't stop admiring the Rocky Coast Cardigan though.
This book is so hard to find here in the UK - would love to win a copy.
kb (aknitontheside on rav)
The Rocky Coast Cardigan. For someone who has never been State side, this makes me think of old movies with beach houses in Northern California...
Even though I feel stereotypical saying it (so many people like it!), I think the Rocky Coast Cardi has to be my favorite. It looks so comfy & so easy to dress up & down…throw it on with jeans & a t-shirt, or jazz it up with boots. I love that sort of versatility.
Those are all really pretty, but I think the one I could most see myself wearing is Bayside.
My favorite is definitely the Rocky Coast Cardigan!
I love the Gnarled Oal Cardigan although I really want to knit every pattern in this book. It would be lovely to win.
~ Paula (messiahkitty on Ravelry)
i have been perusing this collection over and over again on every website or blog that has posted it (and there are many!) and i would be pretty hard picked to narrow it down to just ONE favourite (the patterns are THAT enticing!).. but if you insist, i just might have to go with, oh, um, the rocky coast cardigan.
LOVE the Wildflower cardigan. This whole book is fabulous.
Definitely the Rocky Coast Cardigan - lovely.
The Rocky Coast Cardigan is a beaut, so hard to choose. Thanks for a really great giveaway!
Love the Rocky Coast Cardigan!! All the pics look beautiful though. I would love to win this book.
I've been in love with open cardigans for a few years, so Rocky Coast takes the cake!
Without a doubt the Rocky Coast cardi and the Waters Edge cardi. They are all so beautiful though.

How nice of you to offer this book. I really like the Rocky Coast cardigan, in that color. I'll have to inspect this book more closely (especially if I am lucky enough to win!)
