Book Review & Giveaway: Coastal Knits

This is easily one of the most beautiful pattern collections I can ever remember seeing. Every aspect- the patterns, the photographs, the sketches, the information on the design process, the layout- everything contributes to the overall look and feel of this book. Some of my favourite patterns are:

Water's Edge Cardigan

 Rustling Leaves Beret:

Rocky Coast Cardigan:
 Gnarled Oak Cardigan:

What strikes me the most about this pattern collection is that every single knit looks easy to wear. Not over styled, but realistically pretty- like any of us could knit this, put it on, and get the exact same look.

Alana and Hannah seem very well paired in this East Coast/West Coast collaboration- the knits work together as a collection really well, and it seems only fitting that they share the glory of the two most popular patterns- Alana designed the Rustling Leaves beret and Hannah designed the Rocky Coast cardigan, both are the strong runners for most popular pattern in the collection.

Looking at the patterns on Ravelry does not do this book justice- it really is a gem.  I really liked the patterns when I saw them on Ravelry, but it wasn't until a had a copy of the book in my hands that I was utterly blown away by the whole collection. You need to get this! And when you do, head on over to the Ravelry Coastal Knits Group for a community of others who are also knitting the patterns. You know what else would be fun? How about we give away a copy of Coastal Knits? Leave me a comment below telling me your favourite pattern from the collection by November 20th, 12:00 p.m. (that's noon!) EST.

The patterns are lovely and not overly complicated. I think the yarn choices are what intrigue me most. Every photo I have seen makes the garment look uber comfortable without the frump factor. It's on my Christmas list. I would love to have a copy.

I love the Rocky Coast Cardigan, but I think I most want to wear the Water's Edge. All the designs are so beautiful and I really really really hope I win this giveaway, but of course will keep my fingers crossed for everyone. ;)

There are some really nice designs in this one! I love the Rocky Coast cardigan - like so many - and if it wasn't such a hassle to get books here in Belgium I might have already bought this one!

I've been reading so many good reviews about this book, I must add it to my Christmas wish list! (Unless I'm lucky enough to win your copy!)
My favorite is the Gnarled oak cardigan.

This looks like a great book.

Definitely the Rustling Leaves Beret. It's so polished and clean, but the way the leaves are made gives it a flow and movement. I just love it. Everything in the book is beautiful though, really.

I love the wildflower cardigan! The pockets are gorgeous and that yellowy color... yum! I like the simplicity of the bayside sweater too. Love to make them if I'm chosen for the book. Thanks Julie!

I am in love with the Rocky Coast cardigan...and I mean I would be knitting it in the same yarn and same color, which is definitely a rarity for me. Having lived on both coasts, this book makes me feel all snuffly and sentimental inside. :)

Cheers!

I like the Gnarled Oak Cardigan, among several others. Thanks for the giveaway!

I don't think I can choose just one. I love Rocky Coast and have been plotting how I can make it out of stash dk weight yarn (as I am preparing for a new years resolution to "use what I have".) But I also love how delicate Wildflower is. It's tough to name an absolute favorite with this one. That's why it's awesome you are doing a giveaway! Thanks for the opportunity!

Many nice patterns in this book. I would choose Wildflower but think I would knit other patterns as well. I would love to own this book. Thank you for the opportunity.

I truly love the whole collection, so it's hard to pick one. But the Wildflower is so very gorgeous I guess that would be it. Maybe it's the sunny-day-in-a-field photos that seduce me.

The Gnarled Oak Cardigan is stunning. How did I not know about this book? Thanks for reviewing it, Julie.

Peppermint Mocha Mama said...

I am still torn between Rustling Leaves and Gnarled Oak as my favorite. They are both gorgeous - oh, perhaps this issue is most easily solved by making both and wearing it as a set. There, that sounds just about perfect.

Thank you for the chance to have my own copy of this book - it's a definite treasure.

Sabrina said...

I want this book SO bad!! I've been thrilled ever since Alana first mentioned it on her blog/podcast. My favorite pattern is the Rocky Coast Cardigan. But, I have a feeling I'll be knitting almost everything in this book, when I get my hands on it.

That Rustling Leaves Beret has my mouth watering!

Bayside is my favorite pattern! I don't wear cardigans very often and the designers comments "original is worked in linen, making it great for warmer climates" is perfect for me in South Florida. What I find very impressive is the fantastic website these ladies have put together to accompany book release. It gives you in depth looks at sizes, yarn requirements and a variety of photos. Excellent job and congrats to Alana & Hannah!

And congratulations on your pregnancy, by the way!

The Rocky Coast Cardigan. I've been fascinated by cables lately and for some reason the collar just thrills me to my fingertips.

Roxanne said...

That gnarled oak cardigan is so pretty. I am a slow knitter so it would take me along time to knit but having that cardi would be worth it.

whitney said...

My favorite pattern would have to be the Cambrian Cowl or Water's Edge. Water's Edge is the first sweater pattern that actually has me contemplating knitting something other than a hat.

I'm going to have to add Coastal Knits to my need to buy book list.

Easily the Rocky Coast Cardigan. Do WANT!

Naycha said...

The Gnarled Oak Cardigan is my absolute favorite and I would buy the entire book just for that pattern! Although the others are lovely too and this book is definitely going on Christmas list. It seems these days that I love anything with a leaf motif. I love the natural, organic feeling this pattern evokes especially. Perhaps the drought we've been experiencing here in Texas that has killed so many trees has renewed my appreciation for their beauty.

Sandra said...

I've got to go for gnarled oak - I'm a sucker for a cardigan, and this one has just the right amount of interest. But then again, water's edge is stunning...
