Wee Wednesday: Apple Picking

You know how you get this vision in your head of how something is going to be? Like apple picking with your family. You plan for it, picture all the fun you'll have that day, reinforcing new vocabulary, where food really comes from. And all that fresh air! You'll bring the camera and get some great photos and really make some great family memories. It will be a perfect day!

And then you actually do go apple picking. And it looks an awful lot like this:

I also wanted get some final shots of my new Solaria cowl, this time knitted in Tanis Fiber Arts Blue Label 'Brick'. It's perfect for fall, and I wear it all the time. Here are loads of photos of us in the orchard! The dark red apples are Cortland apples, and the bright red apples are Gala, I believe.

So we made some memories. Maybe not the ones we aimed for, but good ones nonetheless.

Oh, and here's what Lila thinks of pumpkins:

I love your new cowl.

Lovely pics of you in the cowl, and I remember those days of dissatisfied babies (not so long ago). We get our apples at the Farmer's Market these days ;)

Thank you! I needed a good laugh this morning. She may not like the apples or pumpkins now, but my twenty something sons both remember those days with a lot of pleasure. They take their friends out now!

I am CRACKING up laughing right now! Thank you for this post...I dearly needed to laugh this morning!

So glad, my Girl isn't the only one hard to impress around here!

Thanks so making me laugh out loud this morning! I have so many wonderful memories of apple picking with my two kids but I'll admit that sometimes, they made Lila faces, too! Your cowl looks gorgeous knit up in TFA.

Thanks for the giggle. I love those pics of Lila. True toddlerhood captured. She's adorable even when she's asserting her dislike of pumpkins and apples! Your Solaria is splendid. Apple picking was a great background for it.

Oh mylanta, how I remember those days. That precious Lila cracks me up... pumpkins suck too... oh my!!

Thank you for putting a smile on my face this morning - I didn't know how much I needed it until just now.

the family photo in the painted cut out actually made me laugh- it's hilarious! of course, not what you were expecting, but it looks like you all made the best of it (and the cowl is gorgeous). not a waste, by any means. and the one of you all with the baby looking up at you would make a great holiday card. :)

And your new cowl looks fantastic! This is such a great color for the fall!

Oh goodness, the cutout one had me laughing out loud in my cubicle at work... had to cover it up with a fake coughing fit :). I remember a pumpkin patch trip with a baby and a two year old years ago where NOTHING was going as I planned and I was so irritated and my mom turned to me and said "get used to it, this is life". One of my best lessons ever, and I now treasure those crying photos and torture my 12 year old with them!

Those pictures of Lila being angry are AMAZING. I especially love the commentary you added. You should submit them to Reasons My Son Is Crying! They'd be perfect for that website.

I love your Solaria. I attempted to knit it once but it kind of made me crazy. A lot of that came from not having the correct type of needle for the project. I'm going to have to attempt it again soon!

The photo of the 3 of you is hilarious! Funny how things with toddlers often don't work out as planned, but in some ways end up better than imagined :) It'll be fun to see how she acts next year--this year at 2.5 Sophie got almost as many blueberries in the bucket as in her mouth :) And your cowl looks great, need to get started on mine in Lucky Penny!

I went apple picking last weekend, and I am currently making apple butter with our haul! (Cortland apples make tasty butter.) After chopping up eight pounds of apples and cooking them into mush, I still probably have enough for several pies. We might've gone a little overboard, but apple picking is so fun! Love your pictures.

Gorgeous cowl! Lila looks like such a character, even her grumpy face is adorable!

I love it! Fantasy almost never matches up with reality, especially with a Little One that young. I love the picture of you guys in the face cutouts. That is one unhappy apple!

LOL Thess pics had me in fits on flickr and I'm still giggling at them now. I love the kissing one where Lila looks like she's yelling obscenities at you to get here out of there.
She will love this when she's older :)

I know that face. It's the face Little Man makes whenever I get him to try broccoli, squash, or green beans (all of which he liked when they were smooth baby food). ::sigh::

A great post indeed! It's so true, but when you look back it really is a beautiful experience, just not what we expected.

I'm still chuckling; this post falls under the heading "be careful what you wish for"! I'm going to have to show this to my girl, she'd get such a kick from "pumpkins suck too".

Hahaha! The one of the family behind the picture with the face cutouts is the best! That is one to treasure.

the pictures and story are great, but what I really must tell you is that your lipstick is amazing! wear that one every day :)

Just.Too.Funny. That Lila has a mind of her own. :)

And your cowl is simply gorgeous - great color on you. Thanks for sharing the fun photos and artwork.

I love this! I can't tell you how many "fun" outings we have planned that end up in tears, fighting, and pre-teens rolling their eyes. My kids have even memorized my "be grateful for the things we do for you, or else we won't do it anymore" lecture.

Cutest post! Love ALL the pictures, and what an adorable family!

Kathy said...

Oh I just laughed and laughed. Iain is only 4 months old, but I've already had a couple of those vision does not equal reality moments! Thank you for sharing.

Loulou said...

Oh my gosh, I laughed out loud at how you wrote this! In spite of someone's desire to go Cheerio picking instead, you all look great in these pictures. The colours are so great. I've never been apple picking, although we picked up a couple dozen local Gala apples in Chinatown recently and Nick made pies.

Have had a number of those "fantasy collides with reality" parenting moments myself. And the memories always are better/funnier. Agree with Tanis about character -- Lila has it in spades!

you totally took it in stride though! still memories!!!

HA! This post is adorable! Lila is such a cutie, even when she's not into one of the best autumnal activities around!

So cute - and so funny!
My little granddaughter is 2 next week and I recently showed her that apples grow on trees (we live in the "fruit" canton of Switzerlnad!) just near her house - she was amazed and delighted, as she loves apples and snacks on them all the time - we call them "öpfeli" in our Swiss German dialect, but she nods and repeats "böppeli" confidently after us... aren't kids that age simply adorable?!! ;)

You made me laugh. I think I actually guffawed out loud!! I think it's because I have so been there. You want to have a great time...but then that little creature that you love with all your heart has other ideas.....I especially love the last pick....really sums it all up. Thanks as always for sharing.

Maryse said...

This is real life! You have lovely pictures and your daughter will surely laugh watching them one day ;-)

Hilary said...

Hahahaha, yes I know exactly what you mean!!! Before having Daniel, I had ALL SORTS of visions of peaceful picnics in the park, long walks, playing on the beach, our little family sitting and gazing at each other, etc. etc....well, pretty much everything we do ends up like this at some point. :) But toddlers are awesome nonetheless, and these photos are priceless!

And your new Solaria is gorgeous!

these pictures are AMAZING! you look gorgeous, i'm swooning over that cowl, and lila cracks me up! 5 stars, A plus plus!

I'm glad I wasn't sipping hot tea while reading this post! You should put a Caveat in the subject line! HA

The pics of Lila are hysterical! And "Pumpkins suck too" sent me right over the edge.

Your cowl is fab! I think the family pic behind the cutouts should be your Christmas Card.
