Modification Monday: Fake Thrummed Mitts

Original Pattern: Classic Mittens

Knitter Extraordinaire: Julie (Ravelry ID, blog)

Mods: Created a faux-thrum look with a a bulky weight yarn for the 'thrums' and upped the gauge of the mitten from DK to worsted. Also chose to knit mittens flat and seam them afterwards. Project page can be found here.

What Makes This Awesome: I am crazy about these mittens. Seriously. I even love that she knitted them flat and seamed them, just because seaming is practically avant-garde these days in the land of modern knitting. Just look at the picture below where you can see those beautiful rainbow-y floats! Swoon. This mod is an excellent way to use an amazing chunky/bulky weight yarn in a busy colourway- against the simple pale grey backdrop of stockinette, the little dots of colour just sing. I love this streamlined approach to a faux-thrummed mitten. Now I want a pair just like them!

That is a pretty neat idea! Probably a bit less warm than thrummed mittens but much less fiddly and bulky, too.

That is so cute! What a great use for multicoloured, bulky yarns.

i agree with everything you said! it's never occurred to me to try and mod thrummed mittens, but while i've always admired the aesthetics of them, my environment doesn't really call for such warm mittens! what a cool thought!

Oh the things you learn in the Internet! I'd never heard of thrummed mittens before so I looked them up. What a great way to make nice warm mitts!

I've saved the link, thank you! I'd love to learn how to knit gloves in a different way :)

I love this idea! I find actual thrummed mittens annoying to wear, as they're both too bulky to give me the use of my hands, and also prone to those "bare" spots where the thrums get flat.

On the other hand, floats offer extra warmth and this speckled/spotted look is so cute.

The WS is so pretty that I wish there was a way to use them inside out.
