Pattern: Stockholm Scarf

I did promise you all a free pattern, right?
DSC_0686-5
I'm excited to introduce the Stockholm Scarf, which is a luxuriously large and cozy infinity scarf. This scarf looks good with dressy and casual coats, and adds a great pop of colour on a dreary winter (or in this case, a very pretty November) morning. This is a quick knit, and so easy to wear.

I was inspired to create this after all the great compliments I got on the big infinity scarf I bought in Stockholm in August. I was a bit embarrassed when people asked if I had made it and I had to say no (although I then got to say that I got it in Stockholm, and that part was pretty fun).

This scarf features a completely reversible stitch pattern with a 4 row repeat, and is easy to memorize. I knitted this scarf in two pieces and seamed them together, but this was because I didn't have a needle long enough for the whole scarf. The pattern is easy to knit either flat (back and forth in two pieces) or in the round. It's also a fast knit- it took me less than a week from cast on to cast off.

What are you waiting for? Grab the pattern here! Ravelry pattern link is here. It took me 4 tries to figure it out, so if there are 3 other versions of the pattern out there, my apologies. I left my cleverness in bed this morning, it seems.

Stockholm Scarf

A huge thank you goes to my husband G. Not just for the photos (and he always takes such great photos), but for designing the pattern layout and making it look great. In the title bar of the pattern, there is an odd shaping- that is actually an outline of a Stockholm city map. All his idea, and it looks incredible. Thanks, my love!!

It's gorgeous! I really like the color. When I make mine (for surely I will! Just have to finish up all these UFO's) I'll be sure to choose a bold color as well. Thank you so much for the free pattern, lovey!

Gorgeous! -And may I say, REALLY expensive looking... like if I saw a non-knitter wearing that I would assume they had spent big bucks at a specialty store! And your PDF looks awesome! Good job!

and by the way, I love Stockholm, too. It is a wonderful city and I was there already twice. But I'm not as far away from it as you are.

This is beautiful! Thanks for posting the free pattern -- I can't wait to try it. I want to knit it with slightly bulkier yarn, on, say 8 or 9 mm needles. Do you think it will still turn out ok?

Julie said...

Thanks everyone!! I really enjoyed knitting it (once I figured out a stitch, that part was challenging. Jennifer, it won't let me email you back so I hope you check the comments again- I do think you could knit with 8 or 9 mm needles and worsted or aran weight yarn, but you'll probably need more yarn to get the length. A quick swatch should tell you how to proceed.

This is beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing. Just wondering if the pattern as written is for knitting in the round or knitting flat. I could just try it out for myself, but I want to take the lazy way out.

Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful pattern! I was trying to knit it the other day and had problems working out the right amount of stitches to work the pattern. I was trying to knit in the round and I cast on 256 stitches as you mentioned. I noticed when I got to the end of just the first row, that I didn't have enough stitches to knit the whole pattern for the row. I frogged it and started over again 2-3 more times. Then I tried knitting it flat and I had the same problem. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Sorry if this is a bit of a silly question perhaps I need to cast on more stitches to make this work? Thank you so much for your help!

Hi jigosta, you'll need to send me an email, and we can sort it out. Are you on ravelry? If not, my email is on the website, on the right hand side, message me there so I can reply to you properly!

This patten looks great - I would love to make it for my grandma who lives in the midwest and the winter get very cold. Question though: can this cowl also be worn as a hood?

This is a great pattern, and I love the raspberry colour of yarn used. I hope to find a vibrant colour for mine. Thank-you for sharing, and for taking the trouble to make so many translations!

Ok, thank you so much and I am so excited to start this project! I do have a question. I know you refer to both knitting two flat panels and knitting in the round, is the pattern row 1-4 for knitting flat or in the round? I will be knitting in the round and would like to ensure i make any necessary adjustments to the pattern.

Beautiful cowl. I love this color what color is it?

Peg said...

I wonder if you've ever worn this cowl up over your head, and how it works for that?

Mary Bowman-Kruhm said...

I too wonder about wearing it different ways, especially, since my arms get cold at the computer in winter, as an upper arm shawl. Can you mention other ways to wear it? Thanks for a gorgeous pattern.

Thanks for this! I haven't knit in years but wanted to try my hand at the infiniti scarf. This pattern was super easy and quick (and thank goodness for Youtube videos reminding me how to cast on/off!)
