The grass is greener...

Ofcourse, since I'm locked into a project there are about a hundred other things that I want to knit. Hell, I almost picked up my discarded tuscany shawl! (*gasps from the peanut gallery*) I've scoured library books and found my next project. Hobo bag It's a gorgeous slouchy hobo from KnitKnit: Profiles + Projects from Knitting's New Wave I believe. Hobo sketch I was looking at so many books that I'm not 100% sure anymore.(Edit: It is the KnitKnit book. I just bought it!) Either way the book is great! Each designer not only has a cool project, but they go in depth about the knitter rather than a small blurb. I found it a great insight to how or rather why people design what they do. KnitKnit: Profiles + Projects from Knitting's New Wave ... Some of the projects are off the wall, but it was some nice insight. I also loved these projects from various books for inspiration Knitted Nails! Knitted Nails! Crocheted Pillow Embellishments Embellished Pillowcases Kimono style wrap Seed stitch kimono wrap *sigh* Almost done the montegos, Had I known it would be such a commitment when I agreed to them.... Oh well. I feel good churning each one out. Hopefully tonight I'll finish the last one and fringe it tomorrow. How did you guys like fringe on the Origin Montego? Should I add more strands to make it more substantial?

The hobo is stunning! .. the nails on the other hand, are creepy :S I'd imagine that knitting and wearing them would feel almost as if I chopped off someone's hand and wore them :S

I really like the obi... I've been wanting to knit one of those, but then I'd need to make a shirt to go with it.

Great picks!

Okay so I followed through (just had to!) with getting the book with the pattern... I don't know if you'd know the answer to this but when the pattern says 'work even' what exactly does that mean??

Hi Vanessa,

It mean that whatever the established pattern is, keep doing it until it measures whatever length it tells you. For example:

You've been making a purse, and it says to *k2, yo, k2tog* and repeat to end of row. Then work evne until peice measures 6". It means that you just keep doing that *k2, yo, k2tog* until your work measures 6".

Hope that helps!! I tried to email you back, but it didn't have your email address stored.

Best Regards,

Julie

Hi Julie - thank you so much for responding. Your help made things a lot clearer to me if that term were to be used in another pattern. I guess what I really don't understand is the Shoulder Strap portion of the pattern -- How it has a begin pattern row, and then a decrease row.... after the decrease row it says to work even for one row, does that mean to repeat the decrease row? Or the begin pattern row & then the decrease row? Here's whats really getting me stuck though, where it says to repeat decrease row every other row 5 times, then every 4 rows twice to have 24 sts remaining, then "work even" until piece measures 75". So since the begin pattern row clearly needs to be worked over 40 stitches what gets worked between the decrease row? I hope I'm not too confusing or bothersome! That part just sounds REALLY confusing. haha :) My e-mail address is vanessarenee01@yahoo.com if you'd like to e-mail me instead. Thank you thank you thank you again for responding to my question!!

Hi all,

There seems to be some confusion about how to work the Hobo Bag pattern. I received this note from the book's pattern editor and hope it will clarify the project.

All my best,

>>> Let me see if I can explain it in a way that helps them to work through it:
When you look at the cable on the RS, it looks like a column of 2 knit sts that travels from right to left (we'll call it the "cable column"). In order to get it to do this, when working on RS rows, you have to cross 2 purl sts from the left side of the cable column, behind the cable column and over to the right side of the cable column. That's what moves the cable column to the left. When you're working the cable on WS rows, you want the cable column to move to the right. In order to do that, you have to cross 2 sts from the right side of the cable column to the left; note that on WS rows, the sts that go on the cable needle are the 2 sts BEFORE the cable column, not the cable column sts. So you knit up to the last 2 sts before the cable column (you can check this out by flipping over to the RS to make sure that you have 2 sts on the needle before the cable column sts). You slip the 2 sts before the cable column onto the cable needle and hold it to the front of the work, purl the 2 cable column sts (which pulls the column to the right), then knit the 2 sts from the cable needle. I'm guessing that what's happening is they are working right up to the 2 cable column sts, then slipping them onto the cable needle instead of the 2 sts before the cable column, and that is incorrect. When working on WS rows, they must make sure that they work the correct number of sts between the p2tog (sts #47 and 48) and the cable symbol. For instance, if they're working on Row #3, they will p2tog, then knit 15 sts. They will place the next 2 sts on the cable needle; note that these are 2 knit sts (knit sts as you're looking at them; they show as purl sts on the RS). The next 2 sts, which they will purl according to the cable instructions, will be the cable column sts, and purling them will pull the cable to the right on the WS, to the left on the RS.<<<
