Hold Your Needles 1& 2: Review and Giveaway!!

I recently heard about Hold Your Needles 1 and Hold Your Needles 2, two remarkable pattern collections
from Finnish designers Mari Muinonen and Suvi Simola. The first collection has 12 patterns and the second collection has 10 patterns, all for very reasonable download prices. Both collections feature lots of texture and many have gorgeous (I mean, really) cable details.

Hold Your Needles 1 has a great mix of patterns, including two for men, two hat/mitts combo patterns, and  some for kids/babies. Most of the patterns call for heavier weights of yarn, which helps them knit up really fast, as well as keeping you and your loved ones nice and toasty warm.

My personal favourites from Hold Your Needles 1:
My creation
Clockwise from top left: Lumme, Muikkuset, Reha, Muffeli

Hold Your Needles 2  maintains a similar design aesthetic, focusing on the heavier weights of yarn that knit up quickly, as well as lots of rich texture and beautiful cables. You really need to click on over to Mai to check out the amazing details (and it's grown up version, Juuli)- those pockets are amazing!

My personal favourites from Hold Your Needles 2: My creation
Clockwise from top left: Paju, Friika, Kiedo, Mai

Both of these collections are filled with thoughtful details and clever designs, and when you look at the FOs from other knitters, you can see they have consistently strong results- which is extremely important! It's easy to have great pattern photos, but the proof of a great pattern is in it's ability to deliver consistent results.

Suvi and Mari have very generously offered to do a giveaway- 3 lucky winners will receive the e-pattern books for both Hold Your Needles 1 and 2! Just leave a comment on this post telling me which is your favourite pattern from 1 AND 2 (so- you're telling me the names of 2 patterns, one from each collection). The deadline for entering is Thursday, January 19th at midnight (12:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time). I'll announce the three lucky winners on Friday- good luck everyone!

I can't believe I've never heard of this collection- the patterns are so detail oriented and just amazing! My favorites are probably Lumme and Friika, but it was a hard decision!

I hadn't noticed these collections before but I quite like them -- in #1 I like Reha best, I just love stripes! and in #2 I think it's Mirkku, I think I would make it with buttons - or maybe toggles!

Hard one, so many amazing patterns. I would cast on for Johannes for my favourite guy and Juuli for me. And then I would knit the rest afterwards...

Unknown said...

These patterns are gorgeous! Vappu is definitely my favorite for pattern book 1 and I love the Esteri ja Arvi pattern in book two. I especially love that it can be knitted for a man or woman and look amazing on both!

Deb said...

These look wonderful. With weather so warm I still have time to make some of these before its cold here!

RegencyKnitter said...

My favorite from 1 is easily Lumme- I could see wearing that as a spring and fall jacket every day. So elegant. My favorite from 2 is Vammus- love the embroidery.

Kamigaeru said...

Oooh, cables! I'm in love with that Lumme jacket from the first book. (Could I ever get my man to wear a sweater? He'd look nice in Armas!) Again for the second book I'd have to pick cables: the Esteri ja Arvi sweater. Not too keen on pink, but I do so love the button detail on the raglan sleeve. Lovely work!

Jo said...

Goodness, choosing just one from each collection is incredibly hard - absolutely gorgeous patterns! But if pressed, I'd choose Lumme from number 1 and Juuli from number 2. I'll be crossing my fingers that I win these, but if not I'm going to have to buy them - there are so many things I want to make now!

Kaitlin Muth said...

Stunning! I particularly love Lumme (HYN1) and Esteri ja Arvi (HYN2, but not featured here. But picking a favorite is kind of like saying "oh, THAT puppy is the cutest"-- all of these patterns look phenomenal.

C. said...

What a great collection of patterns! In the Collection 1, my favorite is Lumme without a doubt (I love the hood, the reverse stockinette, the leave patterns that remind me of snakes, the thick seams, the cable border... everything!). In the Collection 2, it's harder to pick a favorite: I'd like to knit them all! But if I really have to pick one and only one, it wouldn't be a sweater (too hard to discriminate one: they're all gorgeous and wearable), it would be the Kuurankukka gloves (winter layered lace gloves, how cool and fancy is that?!!).

Helen said...

Thanks for letting us know about these great pattern collections.

I especially like Lumme and Kiedo. Although Muffeli from 1 is very inspiring.

Dora Cherry said...

Lumme and Mai!!

Kara said...

Ooh, how fun.

I really like Lumme & Friika. The embroidered detail on Vammus is fun, too. :)

I don't know how I missed these two collections - such fun cable-y patterns.

Sabrina said...

From book 1, I'd say Lumme is my favorite. I love how the cables organically grow into leaves. I think that is such a brilliant idea! I'm having a hard time choosing which is my favorite in book 2, but I think Juuli is pretty neat.

Lintulai said...

I like Johannes and Esteri ja Arvi the most. Kuurankukka is also wonderfully beautiful.

zzi said...

Hard choice, as I love them all (I have just learned to cable, and may be addicted...). I would pick Lumme and Kiedo.
