Our Newest Family Member

I would like to introduce you to our newest family member....

This is Bruce Quillis.

He's pretty awesome. And so gosh darn cute.

This is our first hedgehog as a pet, and we're pretty excited. We've done lots of reading up on proper hedgie care, and apparently they get on well with cats! Quillis is is 1.5 years old. Once we decided to get a hedgie, I wanted to find one that needed to be re-homed, rather than buy one from a pet store or breeder. It's always so much harder for adult pets to find homes.Yarn is very intrigued by Quillis, but Gatsby hasn't shown any interest in Qullis at all.

Quillis and Yarn meet for the first time. Not quite a successful meeting of the minds.

Good on you for adopting! We have adopted 3 guinea pigs through rescue groups and shelters now, and they've all been amazing little animals.

I'm sure he's super happy to have a good home, too.

Oh my goodness - I had never seen a real live hedgehog until just now!! They are the most adorable animal ever - is he prickly though? I know, probably a stupid question but I'm blond and asking anyway.. lol.

His name - pure genius too.

Yay for another knitting hedgie owner! I also have a hedgehog, Lotus, and they are so cute. Have you seen Quillis foam yet? SO ADORABLE!

Denise said...

Oh my gosh, I didn't know you could keep hedgehogs as pets? My dad used to have some in his garden years ago and he'd leave cat food out for them, and milk?! Can you pick him up or is he really prickly? He is so adorable :)

Ah! Totally adorable! I applaud you for choosing to adopt. Does Quillis live in a tank or is he allowed to roam the house like cats?

Super cute! My brother used to have a hedgehog and I was always surprised by how quiet and shy they are. Definitely adorable. :)

Grace said...

SO adorable! I've been looking for an adult hedgie for years. How did you find an adult that was up for adoption?

Enjoy your new family member!

Awww! He is so cute! I love hedgies. Are they hard to care for? Or similar to hamsters/guinea pigs/rodents?

So cute + awesome name!! I always wanted one as a pet when I was younger but my sister would never agree to it. I hope this means we're going to get lots of hedgehog photos in the future, haha!!!

oh hai Bruce Quillis! I look so forward to meeting you.

Susan said...

I'm with winkieflash. I even have my hedgie's name picked out. I love that you did a 're-home' instead of going through a pet store or breeder. Bruce Quillis is the perfect name.

Such cuteness! I used to have a hedgehog when I was in grade school. He used to make funny snuffly sounds if he got scared and burrow under the rug. Too sweet!

I love hedgehogs and would love to have a hedgie as a pet. It's not possible in australia, but that doesn't stop me from hoping.

My husband was sitting next to me when I popped your blog post up and he couldn't believe how cute Quilis is either! Excuse my ignorance, how big will he get? So adorable!! I can't wait to see more of Quilis!

I don't think I've ever seen one this up close!! SOOO ADORABLE, especially the second picture where he's eating. WOW!!! congrats!

BTW, I came to tell you that I completed Make Up Your Mind top and am in love. I wasn't able to find Luscious anywhere (the only online shop that had Luscious only had it in variegated colorways....) so I used a different yarn but I love it. :) Thanks for the great pattern!

Congratulations! He is such a cutie!

Congrats! I had a pet hedgie while living in America, but I was unable to bring him when I relocated to England :( Sometimes I feel like we live secretly parallel lives - both Canadians, both knitters, both married to Englishmen, both hedgie lovers. Too funny!

Anonymous said...

Whoa! I didn't know hedgies were a pet option. I need to look into this. Cute!

Christine said...

What a cutie! I hope that he pops up on the blog often.

What a cutie! My college roommate had a hedgie named Shimmie, who would curl up into a (very) sharp ball and hiss and shudder just like a teapot when she got upset. Hopefully the kitties will learn to stay away during the teapot moods!

Bobbie said...

A little late in commenting. Your hedgie is adorable. We were really hoping to add a Hedgehog to our family, but the only licensed breeder in AK shut down their operations. We settled on rescuing another cat/ kitty. Hopefully we'll be adopting soon.
Thanks for sharing, "Bruce Quillis" really is sweet.
