What I'm Into Now: Beet Blush

Through the many splendoured thing that is Pinterest, I came across an interesting tutorial on making blush from beets. And considering that I had all the ingredients already in my home, I figured I could totally take 30 mins to experiment with this.

I peeled and chopped one beet, and mixed it with 1 tablespoon of glycerine and cooked it in a double broiler, as per the instructions. I had an old roll-on eyeshadow that I pried open and cleaned out, making it the perfect container for my beet blush. I don't think I could have chosen a better container, the roll on is so easy to manage and there's no mess.

I couldn't' find a better spot to take a photo of this. Just a quick bathroom snap!

And the result? Love it! The colour is really build-able, so it can be as light or dark as you want, and different types of beets can yield different shades. Mine were just plain old red beets, but I'd like to try with some of the more pinkish hued beets out there.  The next time I make this (and heck yes, there will be a next time) I'm going to use less glycerine, maybe 1 teaspoon, and add a tiny bit of water just to make the texture a little less dewy. Glycerine is great moisturizer. I'm also wearing it in the photos as a lip stain, too. I love multitasking products.

These photos were taken this morning, and poor Gatsby, although wanting to fling himself down at my feet and demand tummy rubs, was totally not interested in having his photo taken this morning. At all.

Julie, I'm trying to follow you on pinterest and the button on your blog isn't working and I'm brand new to it so I'm having trouble searching for you.

I hope to find you soon; because I love your knits and style!

Hi meg, your email isn't attached to your blogger account, so i couldn't email you directly! I've corrected it, there was a backslash missing from the link, it should work out fine now. Also, where are you on Pinterest? I can follow you too, then you'll be able to find me no problem!

That is really cool! Geez... so there is a use for those beet stains after all! Here I was wearing aprons all the time when I cooked them. Wow!

There's something so ancient about using true vegetable dyes for regular beauty enhancers. Love your post -- and thanks for the recipe and encouragement to us all to try it ourselves. It probably smells pretty nice, too, huh?

The beet blush looks so natural! Too bad we don't have beets around here.

Your cat pictures reminds me of some "cat yodeling" videos I've seen on youtube (here is one, in case you are interested too. :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEjKk5Kt3rs).

I'm glad it turned out so well! Great idea to reuse the roll-on container.

I'm going to try this. I'm so allergic to lip color, this may be my answer!

How fun! I have never heard of that! I know people use beets do dye lots of things so why not blush? I always love your natural product tips.

What a great idea! I love the natural look of it. Maybe you should make it to sell on Etsy for those of us who are too lazy to make it ourselves ;)?
Blessings,
