from Finnish designers Mari Muinonen and Suvi Simola. The first collection has 12 patterns and the second collection has 10 patterns, all for very reasonable download prices. Both collections feature lots of texture and many have gorgeous (I mean, really) cable details.
Hold Your Needles 1 has a great mix of patterns, including two for men, two hat/mitts combo patterns, and some for kids/babies. Most of the patterns call for heavier weights of yarn, which helps them knit up really fast, as well as keeping you and your loved ones nice and toasty warm.
My personal favourites from Hold Your Needles 1:
Clockwise from top left: Lumme, Muikkuset, Reha, Muffeli
Hold Your Needles 2 maintains a similar design aesthetic, focusing on the heavier weights of yarn that knit up quickly, as well as lots of rich texture and beautiful cables. You really need to click on over to Mai to check out the amazing details (and it's grown up version, Juuli)- those pockets are amazing!
My personal favourites from Hold Your Needles 2:
Clockwise from top left: Paju, Friika, Kiedo, Mai
Both of these collections are filled with thoughtful details and clever designs, and when you look at the FOs from other knitters, you can see they have consistently strong results- which is extremely important! It's easy to have great pattern photos, but the proof of a great pattern is in it's ability to deliver consistent results.
Suvi and Mari have very generously offered to do a giveaway- 3 lucky winners will receive the e-pattern books for both Hold Your Needles 1 and 2! Just leave a comment on this post telling me which is your favourite pattern from 1 AND 2 (so- you're telling me the names of 2 patterns, one from each collection). The deadline for entering is Thursday, January 19th at midnight (12:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time). I'll announce the three lucky winners on Friday- good luck everyone!
Reha and Keido are so gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThis is the first I've heard of these collections but wow - they are both gorgeous! RethaKnitsAlot on rav
ReplyDeleteWow. What stunning patterns! And what a fun giveaway! From hold your needles 1 I LOVE Lumme. From number 2 I adore Kiedo. I especially love the color they used. It looks so comfy and warm.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe I've never heard of this collection- the patterns are so detail oriented and just amazing! My favorites are probably Lumme and Friika, but it was a hard decision!
ReplyDeleteI hadn't noticed these collections before but I quite like them -- in #1 I like Reha best, I just love stripes! and in #2 I think it's Mirkku, I think I would make it with buttons - or maybe toggles!
ReplyDeleteLumme and Friika are my favorites. Thanks for sharing your awesome find with us!
ReplyDeleteI love Pikkuapila and Juuli
ReplyDeleteI love Armas, though sadly my beloved would never wear it (he doesn't do coats, let alone sweaters).
ReplyDeleteEsteri ja Arvi - such a gorgeous pair! Love all those cables. :)
Favorite pattern from HYN1 is Lumme and from HYN2 is Illike. Great collections. The winners will be very lucky.
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI definitely want to make Reha, and Kuurankukka looks extremely intriguing!
Lumme and Mai. But all are so awesome!!!
ReplyDeletei hadn't seen these collections before. i really like vappu and Esteri ja Arvi but they are all beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWow. I can't believe I didn't see any of these patterns before now. I'm so excited! My favorites are Johannes and Juuli. New cardigans for everybody - yay! Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteHard to choose! I think my favorite from Hold Your Needles 1 is Reha and from Hold Your Needles 2 probably Mai. But they are ALL gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteAdore Muffeli and Friika
ReplyDeletemy fav from nr 1 is Reha, and from nr 2 its mirkku
ReplyDeleteHard one, so many amazing patterns. I would cast on for Johannes for my favourite guy and Juuli for me. And then I would knit the rest afterwards...
ReplyDeleteThese patterns are gorgeous! Vappu is definitely my favorite for pattern book 1 and I love the Esteri ja Arvi pattern in book two. I especially love that it can be knitted for a man or woman and look amazing on both!
ReplyDeleteThese look wonderful. With weather so warm I still have time to make some of these before its cold here!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite from 1 is easily Lumme- I could see wearing that as a spring and fall jacket every day. So elegant. My favorite from 2 is Vammus- love the embroidery.
ReplyDeleteOooh, cables! I'm in love with that Lumme jacket from the first book. (Could I ever get my man to wear a sweater? He'd look nice in Armas!) Again for the second book I'd have to pick cables: the Esteri ja Arvi sweater. Not too keen on pink, but I do so love the button detail on the raglan sleeve. Lovely work!
ReplyDeleteGoodness, choosing just one from each collection is incredibly hard - absolutely gorgeous patterns! But if pressed, I'd choose Lumme from number 1 and Juuli from number 2. I'll be crossing my fingers that I win these, but if not I'm going to have to buy them - there are so many things I want to make now!
ReplyDeleteI love Vammus and Lumme! But they are all gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteOoooh, the Paju is GORGEOUS! I need to try that one.
ReplyDeleteI had not seen these collections before so thanks for bringing them to my attention! My favorites, and it was a tough choice, are Armas and Friika.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful collection of patterns.
ReplyDeleteFrom Book 1 I love Muikkuset.
From Book 2 I love Paju.
Thanks for the opportunity to win.
Janmarie- on ravelry
I hadn't heard of these collections and I love them. So beautiful!
ReplyDeleteMy favorites are Muffeli from 1 and Juuli from 2.
Awesome giveaway, thanks! :)
Lumme and Paju are my favorites. They look so comfy! Mai looks amazing too.
ReplyDeleteI love armas and paju.
ReplyDeleteWow! So beautiful! Lumme from Book 1 and Frikka from Book 2.
ReplyDeleteOh I absolutely love "Esteri ja Arvi" - followed very closely by "Lumme".
ReplyDeleteI am PprmntMochaMama on Ravelry.
Stunning! I particularly love Lumme (HYN1) and Esteri ja Arvi (HYN2, but not featured here. But picking a favorite is kind of like saying "oh, THAT puppy is the cutest"-- all of these patterns look phenomenal.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great collection of patterns! In the Collection 1, my favorite is Lumme without a doubt (I love the hood, the reverse stockinette, the leave patterns that remind me of snakes, the thick seams, the cable border... everything!). In the Collection 2, it's harder to pick a favorite: I'd like to knit them all! But if I really have to pick one and only one, it wouldn't be a sweater (too hard to discriminate one: they're all gorgeous and wearable), it would be the Kuurankukka gloves (winter layered lace gloves, how cool and fancy is that?!!).
ReplyDeleteThanks for letting us know about these great pattern collections.
ReplyDeleteI especially like Lumme and Kiedo. Although Muffeli from 1 is very inspiring.
Lumme and Mai!!
ReplyDeleteI've seen a few of these patterns before but never realized they were part of a larger collection. I love SO many. Reha and Mai are both SO amazing!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Muikkuset-that gray earflap hat is darling! And from #2 I like the Pink Esteri. Love these patterns!
ReplyDeleteThey're really all beautiful, congratulations to the designers on such gorgeous patterns! Amazing job. Lumme and Mai are the ones that jump out at me.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing these pattern ebooks. They were new to me. I really like Reha, and Friika the best, but there were others I liked as well.
ReplyDeleteMy favorites are Muffeli and Mai! I like the kids patterns too!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful patterns. I especially like Tomppo from HYN1 and Paju from HYN2.
ReplyDeleteRobin
This is a very hard decision! Pikkuapila and Kiedo are first on my to-do-list!
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful pattern collections! I really like Nti Talonmies from #1 and Friika from #2 is just fabulous! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for letting me know about these wonderful collections. I've added 5 to my Rav Queue already. When I'll find the time to actually knit one of these fab patterns I have no idea.
ReplyDeleteI love some of the men's hoodies. My fav is Armas from #1.
My fav women's sweater is Juuli from #2.
I love Lumme and Juuli! I've always wanted to make a big cozy cabled sweater coat!
ReplyDeleteOoh, how fun.
ReplyDeleteI really like Lumme & Friika. The embroidered detail on Vammus is fun, too. :)
I don't know how I missed these two collections - such fun cable-y patterns.
From book 1, I'd say Lumme is my favorite. I love how the cables organically grow into leaves. I think that is such a brilliant idea! I'm having a hard time choosing which is my favorite in book 2, but I think Juuli is pretty neat.
ReplyDeleteI like Johannes and Esteri ja Arvi the most. Kuurankukka is also wonderfully beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHard choice, as I love them all (I have just learned to cable, and may be addicted...). I would pick Lumme and Kiedo.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite pattern from nr 1 is Lumme, and from nr 2 its Kiedo.
ReplyDeleteDifficult to choose just one but: Reha from number 1 and Friika from number 2
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to choose just one favourite, particularly from Hold Your Needle 2, but I would choose Reha and Friika. (Mai comes a very close second in group 2). Thanks so much for sharing these patterns. They are all beautiful!
ReplyDeleteIf I could knit any two patters, they would definitely be Lumme and Paju. I love that they are in bulkier yarns to make the projects that much more attainable.
ReplyDeleteJulie
Let's see, Lumme from number one and Mai from number 2. I love the yellow they picked, and I don't care for yellow normally.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving Lumme and Paju!
ReplyDeleteLumme Lumme Lumme is my favorite!
ReplyDeleteAwesome giveaway!!!!!
Wow, what beautiful patterns! Would love a chance to win copies! Lumme is just wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI really love Lumme and Paju. I'm getting ready to cast on for another sweater soon, so these are definitely going in my queue.
ReplyDeleteIt's so difficult to chose from all the patterns. I like Johannes from the first book and Mai from the second best.
ReplyDeleteHow come I never saw those before ?!?
ReplyDeleteMy favorite ? From the 1st book : Lumme and Pikkuapila. From the 2nd book : Juuli and Kiedo

ReplyDeleteOh, these are all lovely, and so cozy! But I think Mirkku and Lumme are my faves! bookgeekgirl on ravelry
ReplyDeleteWhat gorgeous designs, and thanks for the opportunity to win them! My favourites are, from 1, Reha (partly because the model looks so happy to be wearing it!) and from 2, Friika because its great to see a knit with an empire line.
ReplyDeleteThis is very hard ... HYN2 ist Kuurankukka and Paju. I really can't decide which is better ...
ReplyDeleteHYN1 is clearly Pikkuapila
They are very pretty and Unique. I really love Lumme. I have never seen cables done like that. From the 2nd book, I like Juuli. The stockinette sides really accentuate the cable details, and add a flattering silouette.
ReplyDeleteKnitterlydesigns on Ravelry

ReplyDeleteOh I just love this book! Got to have one :) The best patterns, to my opinion, are Lumme and Paju!

I need to knit Juuli from vol.2!
Good luck to everybody taking part in the giveaway :-)
Love these! lumme and Mai are my two favourites!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous patterns! Nti Talonmies looks like it would be super easy to customize - longer sleeves, a textured pattern of some sort, super fun! And from #2, Paju looks awesome as well! No turtlenecks for me but what a lovely chunky sweater!
ReplyDeleteThe Ilmari vest caught my attention because it can be hard to find cute and interesting garments to knit for boys, and I have 2 little ones to knit for! I also thought the Kuurankukka mittens are lovely and unique.
ReplyDeleteFrom Vol. 1, I love Reha (that little sleeve pocket!) and Johannes. And from Vol. 2, I love Esteri ja Arvi. Thanks for bringing these to my attention -- I don't know if I owuld have seen them otherwise.
ReplyDeleteIllike from 2 and Reha from 1 - I even think I have a felted tweed project I could frog to knit it!! I guess stripes rule today.

ReplyDeletethanks for introducing these collections to me! I love Ilmari from the first one - great cable edge and genius pocket placement, and from the second one - Mai! What's not to love - hood, cardigan, cables...
ReplyDeleteMuffeli and Friika are such beautiful patterns. A knit sweater dress would make me excited about the cold weather!
ReplyDeleteLumme and Mai are my faves!
ReplyDeleteJohannes from Hold Your Needles 1. I've always wanted a great sweater pattern for a man. I'm torn between a few on the 2nd one, but I'll say Friika is one I'd love to try!

ReplyDeleteAnd from Book #2, I like Mai. Wish it were adult sizes - I'd like to knit it for myself!
love all the designs but Lumme and Mai would be the first to knit....
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteFabulous designs! I've had my eye on Mai since first spotting it on Ravelry, before it was even available. The textural details really make the designs. I'm also head over heels for Lumme.

ReplyDeleteSo gorgeous.
Absolutely Lumme :)

ReplyDeleteWow, so many great things there!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite patterns are without a doubt Lumme (I can just imagine being nice and warm while out in the cold weather we're having now and the cables give it an interesting both modern and traditional look) and Juuli (because of the intricate details and because the green of the pattern sample is just so joyful and reminds me that spring is on its way)
ReplyDeleteReha and Kiedo are my favorites. :)
